Tourmaline gets its name from the word tura mali which translates as "the stone of mixed colors". In the ancient world, it was known only in Ceylon and India, while it came to Europe much later, when the Dutch brought it in 1703. The Indians from ancient times believed that this stone gave eloquence, ease of communication and ability to remember, for this discourse was used by scholars and students.
