The emerald is a precious stone of inestimable value and rare beauty due to its special green color and is the second most expensive stone after the diamond.
The substances chromium and vanadium are what give the emerald its intense green color. Its name comes from the ancient Greek word "smaragdos" which means green stone. They belong to the beryllium mineral group and their hardness on the Mohs scale (mineral hardness measurement scale) ranges between 7.5-8 (with a maximum value of 10). The clarity of an emerald is defined by the inclusions and "flaws" found within the gemstone. Rarely will an emerald be found without flaws and inclusions, and gemologists describe them as an inner jardin (= garden in French) within this impressive gemstone.
